Before you say “What Invitation? What feast? Or was I invited?” Read this parable taken from the Bible (Matt 22:1-14). And Jesus answered and spoke to them again by parables and said, “The Kingdom of heaven is like a certain king, who arranged a marriage for his son, and sent out his servants to call those who are invited to the wedding; and they were not willing to come. Again he sent out those servants saying, Tell those who are invited “see I have prepared my dinners; my oxen and fatted cattle are killed, and all things are ready.
Come to the wedding.” But they made light of it and went their ways, one to his farm, and another to his business. And the rest seized his servants, treated them spitefully, and killed them. But when the king heard about it, he was furious, and he sent his armies, to destroy those murderers and burned up their city. Then he said to his servants, the wedding is ready, but those who are invited were not worthy. Therefore, go into the highways and as many as you find, invite to the wedding.
So those servants went out into the highways and gathered together all whom they found, both bad and good. And the wedding hall was filled with guests. “But when the King came in to see the guests, He saw a man there who did not have on a wedding garment. So, he said to him, ‘Friend, how did you come in here without a wedding garment?’ And he was speechless. Then the King said to the servants, ‘Bind him hand and foot, take him away, and cast him into outer darkness; there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.’ For many are called; but few are chosen’.
This is the Parable of the Wedding Feast as told by our Lord Jesus. A parable is a comparison of earthly story with heavenly truths. It is an earthly story (often historical in nature, but not necessarily so) with a heavenly meaning. It is sometimes placed by the side of in order to explain. Lord Jesus did not explained the parable to His listeners or to His disciples. If you have not already guessed the meaning, I will now explain the parable to you. The King is God; His Son is Jesus; His servants are the prophets, disciples, Angels, and evangelists. Those originally bidden to the feast were the Jews of the nation of Israel; the highways represent the non-Jewish nations of the world inhabited by Gentiles (non-Jews); the wedding feast is an invitation into the kingdom of God and union with Christ through Salvation; the bride is the “body of believers”. The man without the wedding garment is a picture of those trying to enter heaven by keeping the laws and through their own works while rejecting Christ.
Before the creation of the world, God had made plan to create man on earth. Man was supposed to be creatures loved and cared for by God. It was like a relationship of a child to a beloved pet. Except that to God, man is more than a pet. God loved man. God made man perfect and made man to be his child. The Bible called Adam, the son of God (Lk. 3:38). God was Adam’s father, and therefore the father of the human race since all came from Adam. God provided everything that man will need for him including companionship. For this love showered by God on man, man was expected to fear, love, obey, and serve God. And because of the trust God have in man, He gave man the freewill to decide what he wants, whether to be under the control of God (dependency) or not (independency).
Man, of course, in every way disappointed God. Man refused to fear, love, obey, or serve God.. and at times drove God to jealousy by worshiping man-made graven images and giving credits due to God to these earthly things which they called gods. At one time (Time of Noah), man and his children were so bad that God decided to destroy them all. The Bible says (Gen. 6:5-6). “Then the Lord saw that the wickedness of man was great in the earth, and that every thoughts of his heart was only evil continually. And the Lord was sorry that He made man on earth, and was grieved in his heart”. So God destroyed the world with a great flood except for a chosen few, God saved Noah, his wife and their three sons. (Ham, Shem, and Japheth) and their wives. Some animals were also saved.
After the flood, God repaired everything, creating high mountains, deeps, new valleys and with Noah’s family, God repopulated the world. It is also after the flood that God made earth into continents – Africa, Asia, Europe, North America, South America, Oceania and Antarctica. God also promised not to destroy the world with water again (Gen. 9:11-12) and made the Rainbow Covenant as a sign. Shortly after the flood, mankind went back to their evil ways because the heart of man is desperately wicked and mankind caused God to be angry again. God has promised to destroy the world again and this one will be by fire. This will happen on the “Day of Judgment”, and that day has been revealed to nobody, not even to the judge appointed by God, Jesus Christ. (2Pet. 3:10-13).
God is determined to have a nation or a people for Himself. That is, God will save some people from all nations of the earth from His everlasting damnation of mankind. These people are those who trust in the Lord and accept Jesus as their savior. This body of believers who has personal relationship with Christ is bonded to Him as a virtuous wife is bonded to a loyal husband, never to be separated. He will never leave or forsake them and they can never leave Him. There can be no divorcement. These are the ones that will be saved. All others will face the anger of God and spend eternity in Hell away from Him.
This is the invitation which God has sent to the people of the world. Repent of your sins, accept the fact that Jesus Christ has died and paid for your sins, be born again in the Holy Spirit and come to God and be a part of His kingdom. Salvation is free (Eph. 2:8, 9). The time to accept the invitation is now for the kingdom of God is at hand. The Day of Judgment is fast approaching and is very near. Do not delay for it might be too late. Don’t allow procrastination, the thief of time to deny you the chance of being saved. I want you to weigh the prospect of spending eternity or uncountable number of years under the anger of God in a place that have been described as a lake of fire, a place of maggots and worms, and a place of increasing torments.
Why don’t you decide now to come over to Christ’s side, a place with the tabernacle of God and God himself, a place where there is neither sorrow nor crying, a place without sickness or death or pain. A place that needs no light because God is the light therein. I hope and pray to see you there. (Amen). The anger of God is pacified through the shedding of Christ’s blood and death is swallowed up in victory. Therefore, I am not afraid of preaching the gospel of Jesus Christ because in Him is the power to save. God says in Isaiah 55:6, 7 “Seek the Lord while he may be found, call upon him while He is near. Let the wicked forsake his ways, and the unrighteous man his thoughts; let him return to the Lord, and He will have mercy on him; and to our God, for He will abundantly pardon.
I will conclude this paper summarizing the Parable of the Wedding Feast. “The kingdom of heaven is like a certain king (Jehovah God Himself), who arranged a marriage. (An Holy bonding or matrimony) for His Son (Jesus Christ and the body of believers), and He sent out his servants (angels, prophets, judges, other followers) to call those who are invited to the wedding (Jews of the Nation of Israel), and they were not willing to come (they rejected God and His Son). Again He sent out other servants (apostles, disciples, evangelists and other believers) saying, Tell those who are invited. “See, I have prepared my dinner (the kingdom of God); my oxen and fatted cattle are killed (the Lamb of God. Jesus), and things are ready (all sacrifices and oblation for sin atonement is ended). Come to the wedding”. But they made light of it and went their way, one to his own farm, another to his business. (They did not respond to the message, hated God, and they continued their lives of sins). And the rest seized his servants, treated them spitefully, and killed them (persecution).
But when the king heard about it, he was furious. And he sent out armies (Assyrians and Babylonians and Romans), to destroy those murderers, and burned their cities (Samaria and Jerusalem). Then, He said to his servants, the wedding is ready (the reconciliations of God with the Jews and Gentiles), but those who are invited were not worthy. Therefore, go into the highways (the world) and as many as you find (those that believe), invite to the wedding (union)’. So those servants went out in the highways and gathered together all whom they found.
The invitation is still being given today and you are invited to become part of the bride of Christ (his church). As you receive this invitation don’t turn it down, embrace it and do your best to be part of the wedding. It will be the wedding of all time and I am very sure you will be glad you did. You, yourself can invite your family members, friends, colleagues, neighbors, classmates, etc. There is a crown awarded to those who bring much people to the wedding and everlasting life is given as present to those who attend. Do some soul winning (Ps. 126:5, 6).
The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you. Amen.
